6 Amazing Benefits of Infrared Sauna

Whether it’s the Jewish schvitz or the Mesoamerican “houses of heat”, individuals from all over the world link sweating to a plethora of health benefits. One relatively new contender in the sauna industry which proponents can’t get enough of is infrared sauna therapy. But what is it and how is it different to the traditional sauna we are all used to?

Unlike in the case of traditional saunas, infrared saunas do not heat the air around you, making them far safer than traditional saunas, as the latter may be intolerable for more than a few minutes.

Infrared saunas use electromagnetic radiation to warm your body directly. While this may sound a bit extreme, it’s actually very safe. In fact, infrared heating is used in neonatal beds for newborns to ensure they are kept warm.

Because infrared heat penetrates your body much more deeply than warm air from a traditional sauna, you’ll sweat more vigorously at a lower temperature compared to a traditional sauna, making it safe to use for longer periods.

But don’t just take our word for it. The following are some research-backed benefits of infrared saunas that you won’t want to miss.

  1. Increases metabolism

Sauna therapy is also sometimes referred to as passive cardio as it elevates your heart rate and burns calories, much similar to a workout. Just a 30 minute long infrared sauna session can burn up to 600 calories, according to an article published in the Journal of American Medical Association. In addition, one study found that diabetic patients who received far-infrared sauna therapy showed a significant decline in waist circumference.

Another study showed that participants who used an infrared sauna three times a week lost up to 4 percent of their body fat in 16 weeks.

  1. Detoxifies toxins, such as heavy metals, BPA and PCBs

While some may argue that the human body is well capable of carrying out its detoxification processes all by itself, the reality is that we could use a little help.

The average individual can carry about 700 pollutants at any moment. Furthermore, 30-50 percent of the American population has the MTHFR genetic mutation that may stunt detoxification. Therefore, expecting the body to manage these factors on its own can be a bit unrealistic.

So how can infrared sauna and sweating help? Sweat contains water soluble and fat soluble components, making it an excellent channel to eliminate a wide variety of toxins, such as BPA, arsenic, lead, mercury and cadmium.

  1. Reveals youthful, glowing skin

If you’re active on social media, you’ve probably noticed a myriad of selfies of people sporting a gorgeous glow on their faces following their infrared sauna sessions.

Far infrared wavelengths in infrared saunas increase the production of elastin and collagen fibers which help skin appear more elastic and supple. This also helps reduce signs of aging, such as dark spots, fine lines and wrinkles.

Infrared saunas also boost blood circulation and thus, increase the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the skin. This gives your skin that natural, highlighter glow.

  1. Improves cognitive function

Heat stress is known to produce brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which triggers the growth of new brain cells and protects them from damage. Additionally, it increases norepinephrine levels – a hormone that increases focus and concentration.

To top it all off, it also stimulates the production of prolactin, a hormone that promotes myelin sheath growth, the insulating material around nerve fibers in the brain. This increases the speed at which your brain works.

  1. Improves cardiovascular health

According to a Harvard research, the high temperatures from infrared sauna therapy elevate heart rates to levels that are often obtained via moderate-intensity workouts.

In addition to conditioning and strengthening the heart muscle, sauna is also known to reduce high blood pressure and improve blood vessel health.

  1. Enhances slow wave sleep

The American Sleep Association suggests that sauna can be used to increase slow wave sleep, also known as deep sleep, thus helping individuals suffering from sleep problems, such as insomnia.
